In most enterprise environments, this is configured to target a passive node to ensure that the active node—which is actively serving user mailboxes—is not subjected to the I/O overhead of a backup.

The Single Active Copy Exception:PPDM is designed with an " always protect " philosophy. If the database exists as only a single active copy (meaning no healthy passive copies are available or have been configured), the system will automatically default to backing up the active copy, even if a " Preferred " passive node was specified. Transport Mode:This setting determines how the engine accesses the virtual machine disks (e.g.,HotAdd,NBD, orNBDSSL). Administrators can modify the Transport Mode at any time after the engine has been added to PPDM to optimize performance based on the current network or storage environment.

Fixed Deployment Attributes:Attributes such as theNetwork,Data Store, and theESXi Hostwhere the appliance is physically located are part of the initial virtual machine deployment parameters in vCenter. If these underlying infrastructure components need to be changed, it typically requires a redeployment of the VM Direct Engine appliance to ensure proper alignment with the vSphere environment.

Other Modifiable Settings:In addition to Transport Mode, administrators can also modify the engine name and the maximum number of concurrent sessions after the engine has been registered.

TheBackint for SAP HANAinterface is a specialized API that allows PowerProtect Data Manager to communicate directly with the SAP HANA database for backup and recovery operations.

Point-in-Time Recovery (PITR):The most significant advantage of the Backint integration is the ability to perform a Point-in-Time recovery. The Process:On-premises VM backups are sent to a local PowerProtect DD system. From there, the data is deduplicated and replicated to the cloud (AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage).

Recovery:In the event of a disaster, the Cloud DR Server (CDRS) in the cloud orchestrates the conversion of the backup data into cloud-native instances (EC2 in AWS or VMs in Azure), allowing for a rapid recovery of services without requiring a full warm-site infrastructure.

For Microsoft SQL Server, achievingPoint-in-Time Recovery (PITR)and ensuring the database is in a consistent state requires the correct handling of transaction logs.

Transaction Log Sequence:If a database uses theFullorBulk-Loggedrecovery model, PPDM captures transaction logs between full/incremental backups. To restore to a specific moment, PPDM must first restore the latest full backup, followed by any cumulative or differential backups, and finally apply thetransaction logs in the exact chronological orderthey were created.

Consistency:Because transaction logs record the sequential changes to the database, skipping a log or applying them out of order would result in a corrupted or inconsistent database state. PPDM automates this orchestration, but the underlying principle of sequential log application is what ensures the database reaches a " transactionally consistent " state upon recovery.

When deploying the PowerProtect Data Manager appliance as an OVA in a VMware environment, the storage requirements vary based on the deployment size (Small, Medium, or Large).

Standard/Small Deployment:The minimum required space for a standard production deployment of the PPDM appliance is319 GB.

Thick Provisioning Requirement:As discussed in previous topics, Dell highly recommendsThick Provision Eager Zeroedfor production environments to ensure the internal database has guaranteed IOPS and to prevent " out of space " errors that could lead to database corruption.

Storage Allocation:This 319 GB is used to house the operating system, the PPDM application binaries, the internal PostgreSQL database, and the Elasticsearch indexes used for search and analytics. For larger environments (e.g., more than 5,000 assets), the " Large " deployment option requires635 GB, but the baseline " minimum " for a standard functional appliance is 319 GB.

In Dell PowerProtect Data Manager, the primary unit of protection for Kubernetes is theNamespace. While the Kubernetes cluster itself is added as an Asset Source, the discovery process identifies the individual namespaces within that cluster as protectable assets.

Discovery and Protection:Once the Kubernetes cluster is connected using the discovery IP and credentials, PPDM communicates with the API server to list all namespaces. Administrators can then create protection policies targeting specific namespaces.

Frequency:According to theDell PowerProtect Data Manager Administrator Guide(specifically in the " Monitor System Health " section), the software is hardcoded to automatically perform a health check everytwo minutes.

Scoping and Severity:These checks evaluate categories such asComponents(hardware/software services),Configuration,Capacity, andPerformance. If an issue is detected, PPDM assigns it a category and a deduction value based on the severity.
